436 stainless steel coil is a ferritic chromium steel known for its corrosion and heat resistance, particularly useful in automotive trim and exhaust systems. It's a variation of 430 stainless steel, enhanced with molybdenum and niobium to improve its properties, especially in forming processes where it minimizes issues like "roping" or "ridging".
Enhanced Corrosion Resistance:
Molybdenum is added to improve resistance to corrosion, especially pitting and crevice corrosion, compared to 430.
Reduced Ridging:
Niobium (columbium) is added to minimize the tendency for wavy lines or "roping" to form during stretching and forming, a common issue with 430.
Magnetic Properties:
Like other ferritic stainless steels, 436 is magnetic in both its annealed and cold-rolled states.
Weldability:
It can be welded using standard methods, though preheating and post-weld heat treatment can improve performance.
Hot and Cold Working:
It can be hot worked within a specific temperature range (1500 – 2000°F or 816 – 1093°C) and benefits from post-work annealing.
Applications:
Widely used in automotive trim, exhaust systems, and other applications where good corrosion resistance and formability are needed.
