UNS S43035 Type 439 is a titanium stabilized, 18 percent chromium alloy that is a ferritic stainless steel designed to resist corrosion in a variety of oxidizing environments from fresh water to boiling acids. Type 439 may also be used in many oxidizing environments where Type 304 is considered adequate in terms of general corrosion resistance but is subject to chloride stress corrosion cracking. This variation does not require annealing after welding to restore ductility or to provide intergranular corrosion resistance. Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, good weldability, high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion characteristics make Type 439 stainless steel an ideal consideration for many applications.
439 Stainless Steel – An 18% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel that offers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel. This grade combines the benefits of both chromium and titanium, providing enhanced weldability and exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
439 stainless steel is a titanium-stabilized ferritic alloy, recognized for its up to 1.10% titanium content, which significantly boosts its defense against intergranular corrosion. This steel was first introduced in the 1950s, initially aimed at direct-fired water heater tanks, but its applications have broadened considerably, notably in the EU, due to its outstanding weldability and robust resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Featuring a chromium content of 17% to 19%, 439 stainless steel provides strong corrosion resistance, capable of withstanding a range of oxidizing conditions from regular tap water to intense boiling acids. It’s especially commendable for its resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The alloy’s excellent weldability is a key advantage, allowing it to maintain its ductility and resist intergranular corrosion effectively, thereby eliminating the requirement for post-weld annealing treatments.
439 stainless steel contains appropriate amounts of chromium, molybdenum, titanium and other alloying elements. Chromium forms a dense and stable oxide layer (chromium oxide layer) on the stainless steel surface, preventing further oxidation reactions and metal corrosion. Although the molybdenum content in 439 stainless steel is relatively low, the addition of molybdenum can improve the corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance of stainless steel.
439 stainless steel can be solution annealed, that is, it is heated to high temperatures (usually between 850°C and 950°C) to dissolve carbides, sulfides and other grain boundary phases in the stainless steel, and then quickly cooled. This treatment improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of stainless steel.
